On Friday my Dad and I went for a helicopter ride above and around Ogden.
This was only my second flight and was my Dad's first.
This was us before the flight. We were still fairly warm at this point but wore coats because we would be flying with no doors and it was ~45 F at the time.

We originally wanted to fly above downtown Ogden and fly across the front of Mount Ben Lomond Peak but the clouds were really low and that area was dark and rather iffy. It was really my Dad's flight so he made all the calls on where to fly. I just jumped in the back and went along for the ride. Below is a pick from the back seat of my dad and our pilot, Alex.

This is a shot of 24th street and the freeway interchange just after take off from the Ogden Airport. The lighting had patterns caused by the clouds to the west.

We decided to head North and check out Willard Peak. We wanted to be up close to the peak so we just kept climbing. It took a little bit but we got to just under 10,000 feet. Just before we got to Willard peak we went above the Wasatch mountains and headed back South.
Here is a shot just as we started heading back South looking out toward Willard Bay.

I Really like the split sky as the sun was setting the whole half blue, half gold lighting.
And here is one with a different angle looking towards the sunset

It was very, very, cold at 10,000 feet. Outside the helicopter was -12 Celsius (~10 degrees F) but with windchill(we had no doors on-it interferes with the pictures), I don't know how cold it was but I had absolutely no feeling in any of my fingers. It was to the point I was watching the focus confirmation to see if I was actually pushing the shutter button. I get cold just thinking about it.
This is a shot looking Eastish towards Logan

We ended up coming around the East side of Mount Ben Lomond Peak. This is the front side of Mount Ben Lomond Peak

Here is a wider shot, probably my favorite from the day. This is Mount Ben Lomond Peak looking North West.
You can see the hiking trails if you look close enough.

This is just before we started descending to warmer weather. We descended down the front side of the mountain. It was tense for a few minutes. there were a lot of up currents and it pushed the helicopter around quite a bit as we flew through some light clouds. We could only descend about 1,000 feet a minute. When we got down to ~8,000 feet it warmed up to a delightful -2 degrees Celsius (28.4 F without wind chill factor). It was a noticeable improvement.
We then headed South above Ogden over to the Riverdale area. I had also brought my Canon 20D IR camera. This next shot was with that. However, if you are familiar with IR photography, you know it really needs a lot of infrared light to perform well. Since the sun had mostly set, there was very little IR light. I did like the effect, has sort of an old time feel to it.

This last shot was with the 5D Mark II. I was impressed with the detail it resolved. Sure, it has a little noise, but you can see a lot of detail. This shot above South Ogden looking North.
The lower left is Newgate Mall at 36th street and Wall Avenue. I left it larger than the others so that you can zoom in. Just click on the image to view at a larger size. On the full size version(too large to include) I can see detail as far as 20th street. If it was more intersting, I would love to print it big.

Had an awesome time and looking forward to getting out and shooting with my Dad again.
Also looking forward to my next flight. Were to go next???
